Coffee Chain Invasion.
-The Cibo clan.
HOME-GROWN cafe chain CIBO Espresso is taking its Italian-style pastries and coffee to a national sudience. After testing interstate markets by opening two Brisbane outlets since May last year, the Adelaide-based directors will now roll out up to 60 stores on the east coast over the next few years. The CIBO Espresso chain, priding itself on quality coffee, pastries and gelato, expects a 60-outlet business to generate about $20 million in turnover. Founded by four directors all aged 40 or under – Roberto Cardone, Claudio Ferraro, Angelo INglese and Salvatore Pepe – CIBO’s first restaurant, on O’Connell Street and North Adelaide, was opening in 1996 and its first espresso outlet opened four years later on Rundle Street.
Now with 11 outlets in key metropolitan shopping strips in Adelaide, CIBO’s interstate focus will be on Queensland and New South Wales. The compnay also plans to open pastry manufacturing kitchens in each state to supply the stores. “Within the next six to 12 months, we’ll be definately focusing in Queensland. With the high influx of people coming through from teh eastern states, that culture is moving north,” Mr Ferraro said.
“Within 12 months part of the plan is concentrating on Sydney and New South Wales, and Victoria in the 12 to 18 months after that.”
He said the company would rather keep a lid on growth and wait for high-profile cafe sites in its rollout. Franchisees have been paying up to $480,000 in start-up and ongoing costs.
